References tells of your credibility.

Reference is a relation between objects in which one object designates, or acts as a means by which to connect to or link to, another object. The first object in this relation is said to refer to the second object.

Exodus 3:15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors-the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob-has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations.

When people know those who are with, those who trust in what you do, they are able to listen to you. In the world people use “Name dropping” to get the other party’s attention. God knew that the Israelites will underestimate what Moses was to tell them hence the reference.

While Jesus was in Jerusalem he realized that the people are ignorant and don’t acknowledge those sent to them. Matthew 23:39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ “

It is important that the person you use as reference knows you otherwise you become a laughing stock. Acts 19:13-15 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
